Overview of Different Types of Asphalt Paving Services

by Joyce Rivera

Asphalt paving services are essential for providing strong and durable road surfaces. Asphalt paving is used to make driveways, roads, parking lots, and other public spaces. While many people are familiar with the basic idea of asphalt paving, not everyone knows the different types of asphalt paving services.

Patching and Repair Services

This asphalt paving service repairs holes, cracks, and other damage to existing asphalt pavement. Patching and repair services use a hot-mix asphalt material. The repair process includes cleaning the damaged area, applying a binder or adhesive to the surface, and filling the hole or crack with the hot-mix asphalt material. Once the repair work is complete, the asphalt is leveled and compacted to ensure it's smooth and even.

Overlay

An overlay is a new layer of asphalt that lays on top of an existing pavement surface. Pavers use overlays when existing asphalt pavement is in good condition, but the surface needs repair or resurfacing. In addition, overlays can help to prolong the life of the pavement by protecting it from damage caused by the elements. The process of overlaying, cleaning, and prepping the existing pavement surface before the new asphalt is laid.

New Construction

New construction asphalt paving involves installing a new pavement surface on roadways, parking lots, and other large-scale projects. New construction services begin with the excavation and grading of the site. Pavers prepare the soil, add a base layer, and lay asphalt in multiple layers. Once the asphalt is in place, it is leveled and compacted to make it smooth and even.

Resurfacing

Resurfacing renews the surface of old or worn-out asphalt pavement. This type of paving work involves removing the top layer of old asphalt, repairing any underlying damage, and then laying a new layer of asphalt on top. Resurfacing uses a hot-mix asphalt or a warm-mix asphalt material. The process of resurfacing helps to extend the life of the pavement surface and provides a smooth and even riding surface.

Sealcoating

Sealcoating is a preventative maintenance measure that protects the surface of asphalt pavement from damage caused by the elements. This type of asphalt paving service involves applying a protective coat of sealer to the pavement's surface. The sealer acts as a barrier, preventing water, oil, and other substances from seeping into the surface of the asphalt. Sealcoating also helps to protect the asphalt from oxidation and other types of damage caused by exposure to the sun.

Asphalt paving services are essential for maintaining the strength, durability, and appearance of road surfaces and public spaces. Understanding the different types of asphalt paving services can be helpful when you need work done on your pavement surface. Whether you need patching and repair, overlay, new construction, resurfacing, or sealcoating services, it is important to choose an experienced asphalt paving contractor to complete the work. By doing so, you can ensure that your pavement surface will be strong, durable, and long-lasting.
